Hungary has slipped back in the EU’s digital development ranking
The European Commission has been reviewing its achievements in the digital economy since 2014 and publishes them in its annual report on DESI (Digital Economic and Social Indicator).
The report shows the digital skills of the population in each country, the proportion of infocommunication professionals, the quality of the internet offer and the extent to which the government is helping its citizens with digital public services.
In the list based on the data, Hungary still took the 21st place in 2020, and although it is said that Hungary’s results have improved at a rate in line with the annual average over the past few years, Yet in 2021, we slipped back three places, so we are currently in 23rd position. Last year, Slovakia, Cyprus and Italy seem to have improved their indicators at a faster pace, leaving only Poland, Greece, Bulgaria and Romania ahead.

The 2021 DESI reports are mainly based on 2020 data and present the digital economy as well as the state of society in the first year of the pandemic. Experts have adapted this year’s list to reflect the two main policy initiatives that will have an impact on the EU’s digital transformation in the coming years: the Recovery and Resilience Instrument (RRF) and the Digital Decade Compass.
