FBP submits a request for kilometer-based motor vehicle tax – Liechtenstein
VADUZ – The FBP parliamentary group submitted a postulate on Wednesday to reorganize the motor vehicle tax – with particular attention to the financial equal treatment of domestic and foreign road users as well as ecological components.
The FBP group has asked the postulate to reorganize motor vehicle tax in a road pricing system the government to examine this restructuring, to evaluate and to come up with a solution, as stated in the announcement of the citizens’ party on Wednesday. Particular attention should be paid to the financial equal treatment of domestic and foreign road users and especially to the ecological components. Both the legal requirements and the technical feasibility with the financial consequences for the state and the population must be examined. An additional financial burden on the population is to be prevented, as the FBP group affirmed.
“Flat-rate taxation no longer appropriate”
The postulants are of the opinion that annual flat-rate taxation of passenger cars is no longer appropriate and does not do justice to the current challenges of the impending traffic collapse and climate policy. “With the increasing electromobility, the increasing proportion of commuters and the cheap refueling options in nearby countries, the motor vehicle tax and the mineral oil tax are becoming less important,” writes the FBP. “In addition to public parking lot management and corporate mobility management, there are currently no options for implementing flexible control measures that depend on the actual load on the Liechtenstein road infrastructure.”
Alternative models are also worth examining
The postulants would like to leave it to the government to examine alternative models for a reorganization of the motor vehicle tax in addition to road pricing systems. “Unfortunately, the mobility concept 2030 is not a satisfactory solution and it can be seen from the 2021 monitoring report that no activities to test or implement alternative models are planned,” said the FBP parliamentary group. “The postulants are of the opinion that simple organization of the same or digital solution approaches should be pursued with priority. When and how structural infrastructure measures.” The way in which the corona-related introduction of home office coincidentally demonstrated the most effective approach to date for improving the traffic situation makes it clear how influential organizational improvement and control measures can be.
