In San Marino there is the Pass of the Witches from which it is possible to admire one of the most beautiful views of the area. With a single glance you will embrace from the Comacchio Valleys to the Adriatic Sea. But beware: during the summer evenings many say they hear witches laughing and joking.

The Passo delle Streghe is a suggestive stone path which runs along the edge of the mountain and dates back to around 1200. It connects the First Tower (also called Rocca or Guaita), the oldest of the 3 fortresses, with the Second Tower also known as the Castello della Cesta.
Its name melts legend and tradition itogether and dating back to the Middle Ages. It is said that one of the most beautiful girls of Monte and San Marino was a witch. At that time it was believed that cats nerition be the embodiment of witches waiting to steal the body of the beautiful girl they met. There was therefore an order to kill them. But no one suspected her.
On the pass in the evening, many girls also gathered to dance and sing around the fire; they celebrated life and chased away the sadness linked to the distance of their men, busy in the fields. But according to some inhabitants, they too were witches.

One night a young man took courage and decided to spy on them. As soon as he saw the most beautiful girl he fell in love with her. He promised her his love and swore to keep her secret. From that night on, he always went to see her and never revealed to anyone what the truth was.
Even today, many laughter swear to hear them and joke, especially on summer nights.
