November 14, 2021 – 10:48 pm
Draw scheduled for the 26th in Zurich
AN defeat with serbia forces Portugal to compete in the qualifier playoff for Mundial’2022. The National Team will be head of the series, as it will close the European qualifying phase as one of the six best runners-up.
In the playoff draw, scheduled for the 26th, in Zurich, 12 teams will be divided into three ‘paths’ of four teams each, which will compete in a mini-tournament with semi-finals and a one-handed final. The top six runners-up from the qualifying round will be in Pot 1 and play the semi-final at home. The remaining six teams – four worst runners-up and two teams through the League of Nations – will go into Pot 2. The playoff semi-finals are scheduled for March 24 and 25, 2022 and as finals on March 28 or 29 .

Possible opponents of Portugal
The National Team knows two of the possible opponents for the playoff semi-finals: Northern Macedonia and Austria. The Macedonians close group J (won by Germany) and will be one of the four worst runners-up. Austria, on the other hand, puts itself in Portugal’s way via the League of Nations. Doing group E from this qualifying round will leave another possible opponent from Portugal – or even two -, Wales or the Czech Republic. It should be noted, however, that the Welsh and Czechs already have a guaranteed presence in the playoff: either they qualify as 2nd place in group E or via the League of Nations.
It should also be noted that, in practice, all selections that go to the playoff are possible opponents of the National Team, since, if Portugal surpasses the semi-final, it can find the final one of the other five seeds.
Selections already qualified for the playoff:
– Portugal;
– Sweden;
– Russia;
– Scotland;
– Austria (via League of Nations);
– Northern Macedonia;
– Czech Republic;
– Wales.
