Toulouse: unsold bread from bakers becomes dog food
Piers Garnham has just created a dog treat from unsold and recycled bread. A Toulouse bakery seized the opportunity. Others to follow.
For the past few weeks, the counters of three Toulouse bakeries have been offering organic treats for dogs, prepared from unsold bread. An unexpected space that seems to appeal to our four-legged friends and their master: “I recently discovered these delicacies,” explains Nicolas, owner of a magnificent Labrador named Gaston. At first I was hesitant: was he going to like these funny cakes? Well yes, he devoured the package in one evening ”.

Dogs now have their departments in the three bakeries of the Frères Chapelier de Toulouse. A variation of 100% natural cookies, created from organic bread collected and transformed under different scents of the Scraps Gourmet brand. An initiative by Piers Garnham, launched in the Gers: “A native of Great Britain, I worked for several years as a miller,” explains Piers Garnham of the Gers-based company Manna Gascon. Arrived in the Gers in 1997 as a baker, I had the idea in 2012 to create cookies for dogs made from unsold bread. In 2019, I made four recipes around these treats and I started selling these products to different shops in the dog world: grooming salon, garden centers, etc. animals happy to find something new chosen ”.

This circular economy, Piers Garnham wanted to share it with Toulouse bakers: “I knew a little the organic bread artisans Les Frères Chapelier,” he explains. And their convictions. From the outset, the project thrilled them. We hope that other bakeries will follow ”.
For their part, the Chapelier Brothers and their three points of sale – rue Bayard, rue Gambetta and rue Ponts-Jumeaux – are always looking for solutions to sell their inventors: “The very innovative idea seemed to us to espouse our values of waste and solidarity economy, notes Yannig Chapelier. To avoid any losses, we also revalue large loaves and bruschetta ”. If at the moment Scraps Gourmet only offers two flavors, prune-honey, tomato-cheese and spinach-kelp (seaweed), the range must expand. “We really hope that the idea will make other bakers want to join us,” insists Piers. Giving your dog a treat builds bonds between you and the animal. Even if it doesn’t have to become a habit.
