The announcement of the Jewish Community of Thessaloniki:
“This year marks 83 years since the Night of the Crystals, the series of pogroms against the Jewish population launched by the Nazis in Germany and its annexes.
During the attacks, the Nazis destroyed a total of 267 synagogues in Germany, Austria and the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia. Many Synagogues were set on fire all night in full view of the public and the men of the Fire Brigade, who had been ordered to intervene only to prevent the fires from spreading to neighboring buildings. Members of the Invasion Battalions and the Hitler Youth ransacked the windows of some 7,500 Jewish-owned businesses and looted their wares. Many Jewish cemeteries were witnessed with fury.
As the persecution spread, SS and Gestapo (Secret State Police) units arrested 30,000 Jews. Most of them were transferred from local prisons to Dachau, Buchenwalt, Saxenhausen and other concentration camps.
On November 9, 2021, on the occasion of this sad anniversary, the organization International March of the Living carries out for the second year the international campaign #LetThereBeLight.
