Afghans want to go to Switzerland via Austria
When the Taliban marched into Kabul, the attempted illegal border crossings by Afghan citizens in Switzerland increased massively.
the essentials in brief
- The number of illegal border crossings by Afghans has increased.
- This is due to the Taliban’s takeover in Afghanistan.
- In August, 428 Afghan citizens entered Switzerland illegally.
In mid-August, the Taliban marched into Kabul and revealed that they are the new rulers of Afghanistan. The takeover of power by the militant Islamist Taliban also has noticeable consequences for Switzerland.
Since the beginning of July, the number of Afghans crossing the border on the Swiss-Austrian border has increased massively. In February only five illegal border crossings were registered, in July there were 212 and in August 428. This is announced by the Federal Council.
Few women
The St. Gallen canton police have also noticed this development. “The St. Gallen canton police have also recorded a marked increase in such illegal entries at the border in the Rhine Valley since the beginning of the summer,” said spokesman Florian Schneider.
Most of the people entering the country are young men. Of the 915 people from Afghanistan who tried to get to Switzerland in 2021, just four were women. Only every eighth or eighth of them applied for asylum.
