Minjat: the short circuit which is a hit near Toulouse
SUCCESS STORY – It is a short circuit store that is a hit in the Toulouse region. Minjat, to eat in Occitan, employs around thirty people.

Minjat, a food store in the Toulouse region, in Colomiers, it’s like a market. We come here to do our family lessons and we buy seasonal and above all 100% local products. “All that comes from the department and the region. For example, the kohlrabi is made ten twelve kilometers away, barely ten minutes from the store. We have the leeks that come from Merville, the same fifteen minutes from the store”, shows Fabien Martinez, head of the fruit and vegetable department, in the TF1 report at the top of this article. The same goes for all the other products in the grocery department, cheeses and meats. Here, the short circuit is the rule.

The shop was created in 2018 by three sons of farmers. In three years, it has tripled its workforce from eleven employees to more than 30. “We made the choice to have a level of welcome that we strive to take care of there is really advice in store and a presence that allows to exchange, discuss products, talk about cooking recipes also therefore all so that we get to have more jobs than a traditional distribution business “, explains Cyril Picot, co-founder of Minjat.
Minjat means “to eat” in Occitan. As its name suggests, it is possible to have lunch in the store which has a canteen. Here again, we had to hire. Axel Solignac takes care of deliveries. “I have been doing my work-study program here in Minjat since May 2020. I joined the adventure for the values they convey”, says the young man.
350 local producers employing 2,000 people
Direction Saint-Médard in the Gers, 80 kilometers from the store. Damien Lacomme is a poultry breeder there. It sells 20% of its production at Minjat without intermediary. As a result, he is better paid: 60% of the selling price of each of his chickens is donated to him. “We create added value on a farm that is not very large in area. It allows us to properly value our poultry”, he rejoices. This remuneration enabled him to develop and create jobs. It went from one to ten full-time employees.

Damien is part of a network of 350 producers employing a total of 2,000 people. The short circuit as well as an important saving for the region. “It’s more than six million euros to buy raw materials on the territory so it suits us well to know where the money is going”, continues Cyril Picot. Indeed, the short circuit has experienced real enthusiasm among consumers for several years. Today, it creates twice as many jobs as traditional distribution channels.
