Expo Fish Portugal brings together fish importers from 21 markets
“Docapesca announced today the presence at Expo Fish Portugal of fish importers from 21 international markets, from Spain to Australia, passing through Latvia, Canada, Japan, Singapore or Thailand and more than 80 exhibitors, in a strategy of leveraging and boosting the sector, “he pointed out in a statement.
This virtual fair, which brings together trade, research and innovation, aims to increase consumption in the main markets and create relationships with new, less traditional destinations.
The event will have a virtual exhibition space, a B2B business meeting platform and a conference, in a hybrid format, which will take place at the Superior School of Tourism and Technology of the Sea of Peniche.
Fishing, aquaculture and fish processing have a gross imputed value (GVA) of around 1,700 million euros and employ more than 60,000 people.
In 2020, the Portuguese fish sector exported at least 15.5% (917.6 million euros) than in 2019, due to the covid-19 pandemic, with emphasis on the European market, which represents 16.9% of the amount.
According to data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE), last year, Portuguese canned food exports increased by 13.8%, being the main group of products exported by Portugal during the period in question.
In the first half of this year, exports in the fish sector grew by 13%, compared to the same period of the previous year.
In the case of fresh fish traded at auction, the increase in value was 20% in 2020 and 8% compared to 2019.
Docapesca is a company in the business sector of the State, supervised by the Ministry of the Sea.
On the mainland, this company is in charge of the public service of providing services for the first sale of fish, as well as supporting the fishing sector and the respective ports.
