While discussions between Paris and London on post-Brexit fishing licenses are to continue on Tuesday, November 2, according to a statement by Emmanuel Macron, Les Républicains du Pas-de-Calais deputy Pierre-Henri Dumont asked Franceinfo on Monday “an iron brassiere” with the United Kingdom. “Today, 50% of the fishing licenses normally promised by the UK to French fishermen are missing. This is not tolerable.”, he believes.
“There are different ways” to get out of the conflict and “have these fishing licenses”, he says. “The first solution is to have a dialogue with the UK but it is not working.” It evokes a “second solution”, which consists in “appeal to the arbitration which is provided for in the framework of the post-Brexit treaty. It has not yet been done. It must be started.”
According to Pierre-Henri Dumont, the standoff “cannot go through an outright ban on landing British fishery products in France” because jobs are threatened. “The transformation of the British fishery product means 1,500 French employees could find themselves unemployed overnight.”
The deputy of Pas-de-Calais advocates in particular “greater control of the scallop” fished by “the British who have the licenses”. It is necessary “make sure that they do not decide on the authorized tonnage”. He still asks that either “Checked that everything is in order with regard to fishing licenses”.
Pierre-Henri Dumont finally pleads for “some punch actions” to establish : “At the time of the end of the year, make sure to be very zealous with customs officers, blocking fresh produce for a day or two so that, on the British stalls at Christmas time, there are some shortages in order to to make them understand that we too can start a standoff. “
