The big road project-PPP Thessaloniki-Edessa – When does it start?
The planning of the Ministry of Infrastructure for the implementation of the road axis that will connect the security of Thessaloniki with Edessa is progressing step by step. By decision of the Ministry, a search for a technical consultant begins to prepare a file in order for the project to be approved and integrated as a public-private partnership project (PPP).
In the project includes the section from Montenegro to Edessa, while the bypasses of Giannitsa and Chalkidona will be constructed, projects that have been claimed for years by the local communities.

The goal is the integration and the start of the project
The aim is for the project to be approved by the Interministerial Committee in order to be included in the government’s PPP project program. The project also includes the operation-maintenance of the Axios River-Edessa Bridge section. The goal is to start the competition in the first half of 2022.
According to the decision, the upgrade works of the Thessaloniki-Edessa road axis, especially in upgrade of the EO2 road axis (Mavrovouni-Edessa, Bypass of Giannitsa, Bypass of Chalkidona), which is imperative.
This is another road project – PPP, after the BOAK section Hersonissos-Neapoli, Kalamata-Pylos-Methoni, the flyover of Peripheral Thessaloniki and Drama-Amfipoli. All this is part of the ambitious project program of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport that reaches 13 billion euros.

Upgrading the road network of the area
Last April, the Prime Minister of the country, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, had announced the specific PPP together with Drama-Amphipolis. Also in this project, recruitment procedures have started.
Its implementation will contribute greatly to improving the safety of the road infrastructure of Central Macedonia, the tourist upgrade of the region and the upgrade of the offered tourist product by ensuring fast and safe movements, as well as the reduction of the transport costs and the increase of the competitiveness of the important in extent and importance for the national economy of primary and secondary sector of the economy of the area.

The contractor who will undertake the studies, construction, maintenance and operation of the project for 27 years. The time of the construction period is estimated at about 4 years. Repayment will be made by payment availability.
Interventions will be made in a length of 25 km from the Prefecture of Thessaloniki to the Prefecture of Pella. It will be connected to the Egnatia Odos and consequently to the national highway network. According to initial estimates, the road of the new axis will be reduced by about 10-15 minutes.
