The project, aimed at creating a dialogue related to the economic and social policies that revolve around the sex market, takes place from 24 to 30 October on the occasion of the twentieth anniversary of the first protest organized by the Committee for the civil rights of prostitutes, led by the activist Carla Corso, during the 2001 Venice Biennale. Twenty years ago a group of prostitutes marched through the streets of Venice with red umbrellas. The event was part of the “Prostitutes Pavilion” initiative staged by the Slovenian artist Tadej Pogacăr for the 49th Venice Biennale with the aim of making people reflect on the world of prostitutes. Along the way, the participants in the demonstration chanted slogans such as “Sex work is work” and “Prostitution is not a crime”.

Activists and sex workers who fight for the rights of prostitutes gathered in Venice on Sunday for the opening demonstration of the “Umbrella: Twenty years of activism with red umbrellas” cycle.
This Sunday activists and prostitutes marched through the streets of Venice holding red umbrellas, a symbol of protection from abuse, violence and prejudice. The procession reached Punto Croce, a meeting place in Campo San Giacomo dell’Orio, where the artist Tadej Pogacăr presented the body of work “CODE: RED”.
Along the way, the participants in the demonstration chanted slogans such as “Sex work is work” and “Prostitution is not a crime”.
