return to medieval times at the Couvent des Jacobins for the All Saints holidays
The Convent of the Jacobins in Toulouse offers new activities on the medieval world on the occasion of the All Saints holidays. Every day at 3 p.m., an activity will be offered by this vestige of the Middle Ages. If the program is more intended for children, “adults will also find their account”, specifies Marie Bonnabel, curator of the Couvent des Jacobins.
Illuminations and scrolls
Free and accessible from eight years old, the first animation invites everyone to step into the skin of a copyist monk. “The objective is to make discover the world of manuscripts of the Middle Ages by the practice”, explains Marie Bonnabel. The opportunity for participants to make a link in the past by creating their own scroll decorated with illuminations.
Fashion in the middle ages
From ancient illuminations, the Couvent des Jacobins has also been able to recreate outfits from the 13th to the 15th century.. The only difference with the times: they are easy to put on. “We offered the children to dress up while their evolution in fashion, which was already important at the time,” says the curator of the Couvent des Jacobins. This animation is also free.
“Like a big Lego game”
After fashion, it’s time for construction. Children make a medieval vault themselves during the free animation: “The secrets of the builders”. Using period tools such as a 13-knot rope or a squirrel cage, the young participants can become real apprentice builders. “When we live an experience, we understand better than with scholarly explanations,” says Marie Bonnabel.
The monster hunt
The last animation, this time paying (5 € + booking fees), begins with a treasure hunt. Children must go in search of fantastic animals scattered around the Couvent des Jacobins. They can also listen to a tale about imaginary creatures from the Middle Ages.
“The second part is a practical workshop which consists of creating your own little monster, and going home with it”, explains the curator of the historic site. In addition to all these animations, classic guided tours are offered every day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the All Saints holidays.
