EU and British still have no solution on Northern Ireland issue | financial
“But the truth is that there are still big differences on the important points.” The British indicate that a breakthrough must come soon.
As part of the Brexit deal, which was signed last December, it was agreed that goods transported from Great Britain to Northern Ireland must meet European requirements and therefore also be checked. In this way, a hard border can be prevented between the EU state of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Such a hard border could jeopardize the hard-won peace between pro-British Protestants and pro-Irish originals in Northern Ireland.
The British have called the Northern Ireland protocol unworkable for some time and have publicly threatened to cancel it unilaterally. Euro Maros efčovič already offered a significant relaxation of controls on British goods, but that is not enough for the British. They also find the fact that the European Court of Justice is an arbitrator in disputes unpalatable.
It does not seem likely that the removal of that role is negotiable for the European Union, resulting in the withdrawal of the treaty appearing to be the possible step for the United Kingdom. According to sources in Brussels, the European Commission would like to hit back hard if the British do.
