Portugal welcomes 43 Afghan refugees from Greece
This Tuesday, Portugal welcomed 43 more Afghan citizens from Greece, reaching the goal of receiving 100 refugees under the agreement established with the Greek State in 2019, the Government said in a statement.
The reception of 40 beneficiaries of international protection and three applicants for international protection “result of the work and joint effort of the Portuguese Government – involving the governing areas of Foreign Affairs, the Presidency of the Council of Ministers and the Internal Administration – and of Imamat Ismaili / Aga Khan Network for Development, in a collaboration that appears within the context of the various Cooperation Agreements that have been signed between the two parties”, the document reads.
The refugees are welcomed under the administrative agreement between Portugal and Greece and the pilot project signed in March 2019, says the joint statement from the offices of the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs, Augusto Santos Silva, from the Ministry of State and the Presidency , Mariana Vieira da Silva, and the Minister of Internal Administration, Eduardo Cabrita.
The government points out that the goal now achieved comes three years after a visit by Minister Eduardo Cabrita to a refugee camp in Greece, which began the process of Portuguese availability to receive refugees from the country.
