BVB put forward, Salzburg opponent Wolfsburg lost again
Borussia Dortmund started the 8th round of the German Bundesliga and, thanks to a 3-1 home win over Mainz, took two points ahead of Bayern. On the other hand, Saturday ended bitterly for Salzburg’s upcoming Champions League opponent Wolfsburg, who suffered a 2-0 defeat at Union Berlin and thus their third defeat en suite. Union is three points behind BVB fifth, Freiburg two points back fourth after a 1-1 draw against Leipzig.
Marco Reus (3rd) and Erling Haaland with a double pack (54th, 94th) ensure the ultimately clear Dortmund success. Haaland, who had missed the three compulsory games before with a thigh contusion, took the lead again with goals 8 and 9 of the season. His first pursuer Robert Lewandowski (7) can add more on Sunday (3:30 p.m.) when his Bavarians appear in the Schlager at Leverkusen.
Wolfsburg – still without the long-term injured Xaver Schlager – was the better team in Berlin for a long time, but the goals were made by the hosts, with Christopher Trimmel on the bench. Taiwo Awoniyi gave Union the lead (49th), Sheraldo Becker increased (83rd). The Berliners displaced Wolfsburg, which has been without a win for six competitive games, from fifth place.
Freiburg heralded the era in the new 35,000-meter stadium thanks to the equalizer from Woo-yeong Jeong (64th) with a 1-1 draw against Leipzig and gave the runner-up the next small damper. Substitute Konrad Laimer’s troops did not take an undeserved lead with a 911 from Emil Forsberg (32nd). The paid foul on Christopher Nkunku was caused by Philipp Lienhart, the somewhat tough decision behind a raging Freiburg coach Christian Streich. However, his team continues to be surprised and is the only one without defeat, RB lags behind one claims and remains five points behind Freiburg.
Eintracht Frankfurt’s coach Oliver Glasner was also not very happy. Just die Berliner Hertha ended their crisis away against the weak hosts around Martin Hinteregger and substitute Stefan Ilsanker. Marco Richter (7th) and Jürgen Ekkelenkamp (62nd) scored the guest hits. In the table, Hertha overtook the overall weak Eintracht with nine points. Frankfurt was also helped by a small increase in performance after changing sides and a penalty from Joker Goncalo Paciencia (78th).
In the evening game, VfB Stuttgart fought for a physical point despite major personnel worries. The team, which had to replace ten players – including Sasa Kaljdzic – died due to a few corona cases and injuries, came to a 1-1 (1-1) at Borussia Mönchengladbach from coach Adi Hütter. This means that VfB continues to keep the distance to the relegation zone. The Gladbachers, on the other hand, missed the third win in a row and the jump to an international starting position without the convalescent Stefan Lainer or with Hannes Wolf on the bench. Jonas Hofmann scored the equalizer (42nd) after Konstantionos Mavropanos had put the guests in the lead (15th).
