The Climate Policy Roundtable will meet to discuss an agreement on a low-carbon circular economy
Climate policy The round table meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 13th. The meeting will focus on a low-carbon circular economy agreement, which aims to contribute to the achievement of the goals set in the circular economy program completed in spring 2021.
The government adopted a resolution on the circular economy program in April 2021. It states that the consumption of non-renewable resources will decrease and the sustainable use of renewable resources may increase to the extent that Finland does not exceed what it was in 2015 by 2035. The utilization rate of recycled materials must also be doubled by 2035.
“The circular economy offers solutions to curb overexploitation of natural resources and thereby halt climate change and biodiversity loss. The mere goal of reducing resource use takes us in the right direction – this has been seen to support this goal. “, says the Minister of the Environment. Climate change Krista Mikkonenleading the meeting.
One way to further the objectives of the circular economy program is a low-carbon circular economy agreement, to which municipalities, companies and other stakeholders should join with their own commitments. Commitments would be based on scenarios in which organizations work with research institutes to score points towards a carbon-neutral future. Based on these scenarios, operators set their own goals and commit to them. Scenario processes can also be included in the low-carbon roadmaps developed by many sectors in recent years, which should now be updated and supplemented. To implement more effective measures, a network of experts will be put together to provide tools, find suitable sources of funding and help resolve bottlenecks.
The Climate Policy Roundtable brings together a wide range of stakeholders from different sectors of society. The purpose of the round table is to create a common understanding of how Finland can make a fair transition to a carbon-neutral society by 2035. The work of the round table supports the preparation and implementation of Finland’s national climate policy.
