The ThéâtredelaCité offers, in this 2021-2022 season, a more dense and abundant program than ever, placed under the sign of reunion.
Physical, happy, almost sensual, rejoicing Stéphane Gil, deputy director of the place:
“We have chosen to put bodies back in motion, to find what we have been so lacking in recent months: the touch, the sensory. We have talked so much about social distance that we wanted to come back, for example with “Mazùt” by Baro d’Evel until October 15, to what makes our animality, this almost savage search for the other. “
“The circus is the poor relation of the show”
The circus will be in the spotlight, notably with “Campana” from the Trottola circus at the Usine. “We wanted to welcome the circus on a large stage as much as under a big top – the Lido, for example, is an internationally renowned Toulouse school – to give back its letters of nobility to what is perhaps the poor relation of the spectacle ”.
Stéphane Gil’s favorites
On the 46 glasses that the Théâtre de la Cité is presenting until June 2022, 24 will be for the first time and the offer is so vast that we asked Stéphane Gil for his favorites, one for each genre – or almost.
“In dance, we welcome October 13 and 14“ Any attempt will result in crushed bodies and broken bones ”by Jan Martens, whom we discovered in Avignon. It is a large stage, with 16 dancers aged 17 to 65, who represent the diversity of a contemporary society. Their bodies in movement evoke the demand, the revolt of a group which says “We do not agree”. Major social and anti-dictatorial movements seen in a demonstration. “
“Milo Rau, a theater of flesh, violent and aggressive”
“In contemporary theater, we will present from November 9 to 27“ IvanOff ”, according to Tchekhov.
Galin Stoev, the artist-director of ThéâtredelaCité, wanted to move away from the label of the Russian director with a large table, the family around etc. He asked composer Fredrik Brattberg to rewrite the text and Arié, video artist, to imagine avatars similar to those of video game characters. “These will be animated by the actors, whose faces they will have. Galin asks questions and goes to find what is secret in each of us… ”
“Documentary theater is rare, and we are very happy to present ‘Reprise’ by Milo Rau from December 7 to 9. Milo lives in Antwerp and he draws the source of his plays from the various facts. With “Reprise”, he tells us the story of this young homosexual man who, on leaving a nightclub, got into a car before being beaten to death. With this story that moved the Belgian population in 2012, Rau met us in this drama: we are with this young man and we wonder what we would like to do if we had witnessed this scene. It is a text of great power, a theater of flesh, violent and aggressive, which makes us lose our means. “
And for the young audience?
“To young audiences, from February 15 to 18, we will be offering Frédéric Sonntag’s“ Child Ocean ”, according to Jean-Claude Mourlevat. It is an investigative spectacle around Little Thumb: he lives with his five brothers and sisters and their parents, who beat them and starve them. They decide to go see the sea. Then begins a treasure hunt: they must walk, take the train, hitchhike … There are video projections and Little Thumb is in truth a puppet manipulated by his brothers and sisters … “
“The event of the season will undoubtedly be the“ Tales & Legends ”by Joël Pommerat, who is the most translated playwright in the world. This show presents a group of teenagers who live with robots with the build and the appearance of human beings. Endowed with artificial intelligence, these robots must help us in our daily lives, make our lives easier, provide us with services, free us up time to indulge in leisure activities… of conscience, of power, of values… In a nutshell , ambiguity in the pursuit of progress and this search for well-being… which is only a form of slavery… ”.

Zoom on the Pavé Theater
The Théâtre du Pavé is home to the Cie des Vagabonds, a troupe which has the reputation of making an excellent theater.
This season of cultural reopening will be no exception. The start of the season pays homage to Marcel Pagnol with “Marius” (September 23-October 9) and “Fanny” (September 29-October 10). Between two “Cobblestones in jazz”, we will be delighted to find all the talent of Denis Rey (photo) in “The fetishist” (November 9-14) and “The anguish of King Solomon” (March 8-19). The artistic director of Les Vagabonds, Francis Azéma, performs in “Le roi se meurt” (29 March-3 April) and “Le voyage de Jaurès en Amérique Latin” (24-28 May).
From December 2 to 4, it’s a dark Toulouse story, which combines with Jihad, which will be told in “Chahid”. The play traces the journey of Nicolas Bons, a young Toulouse resident who left for Syria in 2013, accompanied by his half-brother Jean-Daniel to wage jihad. All in the form of a fictitious testimony.
Before Christmas, a lot of time will be devoted to Georges Feydeau (December 16-31).
