Digital identity card: the avant-garde example of Monaco
After eighteen months of active preparation, the Principality of Monaco launched a digital identity service last June. This being materialized by a new type of digital identity card. Thus, the 38,350 Monegasques concerned can access various online services, public or private. This very simply and securely.
A device set to expand
For the moment, unlike the principality, this type of digital device is still in France at the project stage. However, Brussels aims by October 2022 to provide every citizen residing in Europe with a digital identity card. But obviously, Monaco has just taken a step ahead.
A relatively short site
Originally, the Monegasque beginnings of this digital project began three years ago. Subsequently, the law of December 17, 2019 accelerated its development. This then resulted in the creation of a legal framework that defined the Monegasque digital identity. This is done fairly quickly, thanks to small administrative services. Subsequently, these efforts were obtained on a physical identity document for Monegasques. And a residence permit for ordinary residents. These proofs of identity are exclusively issued by the Monaco town hall. At the same time, it is still possible to use your old card, if it is valid.
Just optional
To this day, the activation of this new digital identity remains subject to the will of the inhabitants of the principality. Indeed, despite the advantages that this service provides, the principality wishes to clarify that it does not wish to impose it. Thus, it therefore remains optional. And Monaco only activates this possibility in addition to the physical dimension already of the cardholder. Moreover, the Rock has voluntarily avoided dematerializing the necessary administrative procedures, in order to keep the premises of its physical services. This makes it possible, when the digital identity card is issued, to have it validated by sworn officers. They can then verify the identity of the person who comes to pick it up.
