FRANKFURT: The German metal dealer Kloeckner & Co has established a partnership with the Swedish steel company H2 Green Steel (H2GS) to secure deliveries of so-called green steel from the middle of the decade, it said on Thursday.
From 2025, Kloeckner aims for annual deliveries of up to 250,000 tonnes of steel from H2GS, it said, adding that the volume may increase in the future. Green steel is made with hydrogen from renewable energy, rather than with fossil fuels.
“Through our partnership with H2 Green Steel, we will significantly increase the availability of green steel for our customers and enable them to build an emission-free value chain,” says Kloeckner’s CEO Guido Kerkhoff.
H2GS said in February that it planned to build a fossil fuel-free steel plant in northern Sweden, including a sustainable hydrogen plant, with production from 2024.
Investors in the facility include Spotify founder Daniel Ek, Kinnevik’s main owner Cristina Stenbeck, Mercedes-Benz and Vargas Holding, co-founders of the battery manufacturer Northvolt.
