The Under-21 selector has no doubts that Portugal is favorite in the match against Liechtenstein, for the qualifying phase of Euro 2023 in the category.
“There is no possible comparison in the quality of players between Portugal and Liechtenstein”, he said.
Rui Jorge leaves, however, a warning: “This does not mean to have a worse behavior in relation to what is our way of facing the game”.
“With this present, in a natural way, we will be able to be superior to Liechtenstein”, he added.
To overcome the opponent’s defensive barrier, it will be necessary to “play simple and fast to find spaces”.
“We will want to play well, demonstrate the quality of the players, not fall into individualism and try to play an interesting game”, said the national coach.
Rui Jorge doesn’t like old comparisons, because this group has athletes who were part of the previous Under-21 team.
The idea is: these athletes have more than a year to reach the level where the previous team was. “There is a lot to grow in clubs” and then “hope for the quality of play to improve”.
Regarding the tactics to use, Rui Jorge likes the versatility (4-4-2 diamond and 4-3-3). “I would like to be comfortable with both systems. Players adapt and interpret what they want to do”.
The quinas team has been in training in Guimarães.
