Transporting gas bottles from Spain to Portugal: Can you or not be fined after all? Find out the answer here!
It is common knowledge that the difference in prices for gas cylinders, practiced in Portugal and Spain, is quite different. According to Deco Proteste, the average price of a 13-kilogram debutane bottle in the last quarter in Portugal stands at 26.80 euros and an 11 kilogram bottle of propane costs on average 25.88 euros. In Spanish territory, and according to data from Galp Energia, a 12.5 kilogram butane bottle costs 16.12 euros and an 11-kilogram propane cost 14.19 euros.
Recently, a post on social networks in which an internet user complains of having been fined by the Tax and Customs Authority of more than 300 euros for bringing gas cylinders from Spain to Portugal, asks the question whether this transport is legal or not.
With this difference in prices, many Portuguese, favoring the fact that they are close to Spain, resort to this country to buy gas bottles.
This issue was analyzed by the Sic Polygraph who, questioning the Institute of Mobility and Transport (IMT) found that the “international transport of hazardous substances is allowed pursuant to the Agreement Concerning the International Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road (ADR), approved by the Decree-Law No. 41-A / 2010, in the current wording “.
There are cases of exemption provided for by the document, as the “transport of hazardous substances carried out by natural persons when as bulk substances they are packaged for retail sale and intended for their personal or domestic use or for leisure or sports activities, provided they are attended to measures to prevent any content leakage under normal transport conditions”.
There are, however, some rules: if the substances to be transported first “flammable liquids carried in full refillable containers” transported by or to an individual “the total amount it should not exceed 60 liters per pool and 240 liters per transport unit.
The IMT equal to the same source that, “in the context of competition that defines the safety rules for the transport of dangerous goods, two gas bottles are allowed to be transported from Spain to Portugal”
So, know that you can buy gas in Spain but cannot transport more than two cylinders to Portugal. If you do not meet this requirement, you risk being fined!
