The price of gas is soaring, but not our bill
In the middle of last week, the price of natural gas reached 79.31 euros per megawatt hour, a historic high on the benchmark European market. “On the wholesale market, you can buy gas for a whole year, for a quarter. At the start of the year, the price of the “band” – which is comparable to a barrel for oil – was fluctuating around 17-18 euros per megawatt hour, today we are at 75 euros “, explains Claude Simon, Head of Energy Sales of the energy company Enovos Luxembourg, before reassuring: “It is exceptional, but it is due to a temporary effect”.
By purchasing part of the energy currently consumed in advance, the supplier acts as a “buffer”. The repercussion for Luxembourg households will therefore not be as crass as the surge on the markets. “In October-November, the customer will pay 0.70 euros including tax per m3 of gas, against around 0.55 euros at the start of the year. The simulation for Luxembourg average consumption, of 2,700 m3 per year for a single-family house from the 80s and 90s with 250 m2 of living space, shows an increase of approximately 25% in the final price this year compared to 2020 ” , calculates Claude Simon.
Good news, the bill should lighten in 2022. “The band for the 2nd quarter is around 16 euros per megawatt hour, a normal level, and 34 euros for the 3rd quarter and there, it is still going”, notes our specialist .
