Updated September 11, 2021, 9:44 a.m.
- A NATO aircraft has flown over Austrian airspace at a height of 1,000 meters instead of the mandatory 10,000 meters.
- There has been no such serious airspace violation in Austria in the last 20 years, said a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense.
According to the Defense Ministry in Vienna, a NATO Boeing C-17 “massively” violated Austrian airspace.
The machine flew over the Attersee near Salzburg on Friday at an altitude of 1,000 meters instead of the prescribed altitude of around 10,000 meters.
“Wrong Driver on a Autobahn”
A spokesman for the ministry said the aircraft behaved “like a wrong-way driver on a motorway” and put aviation at massive risk.
Two Austrian Eurofighters escorted the transport aircraft from the airspace to Hungary, where the C-17 fleet of the western military alliance NATO is stationed.
There has been no such serious airspace violation in Austria in the last 20 years, said the spokesman.
