Masaryk railway station has a new restaurant, the hit is to be a bun
Restaurant Masaryčka is part of the reconstruction and transformation of Masaryk railway station. “The first-class imperial restaurant has been operating here since 1869. The restaurant remained here until the 1990s, but its quality gradually declined. In the end, a casino was built here, “said Jan Vodvářka from Penta, who has been in charge of the reconstruction of Masaryk Railway Station since 2016.
The restoration of the restaurant was supervised by conservationists, and cast iron columns and coffered ceilings were preserved. “The whole reconstruction of the restaurant cost 70 million crowns. It took us quite a long time to find a suitable tenant who would go with us to the investment, ”adds Vodvářka. The tenant who shared the costs with Penta is the Lagardere group.

The fact that, while removing the wall cladding in the casino, the workers even found several syringes and old ID cards, as evidenced by what gradually became the former imperial canteen.

Marek Hosnedl will cook in the new restaurant. “I want to combine healthy cuisine with tradition,” said the chef, who cooked at Café Sahara on Námětí Míru and then headed the chefs on eleven river boats for Switzerland from Hungary to Hungary. Modern and traditional are connected not only on a plate, but also in the restaurant itself, according to the tenant, modern technology meets the historic architecture of the famous railway station.
He does not want to reveal the complete menu yet, but the bun should also find a place on it, even as one of the blockbusters of the menu. Nevertheless, Honedl is not an exemplary lover of sweets, quite the contrary.

The reconstruction of the station itself began in 2012 with a total reconstruction of the roof of the arrival hall, and Penta is investing a quarter of a billion crowns. After the opening of the restaurant, there will be a corridor along Hybernská Street in the historic building, which is a joint work of Czech Railways and Penta, where the cash registers used to be. A shopping arcade will probably be built here by the end of next year. “The reconstruction is divided into stages and it only takes a long time because we want to minimize the operation of the station and reduce passenger comfort,” said Penta Group spokesman Ivo Mravinac.
Part of the transformation of Masaryk railway station and its surroundings is the creation of a new district, named the new restaurant Masaryčka. In addition to the station, the space in front of it will change and a modern landmark will grow in the immediate vicinity – a building designed by the famous architect Zaha Hadid and her studio. The new part of Masaryk’s project will cost more than two billion crowns and should be completed by the end of 2023. Then the time will come for the next stages called Florenc 21, for which it is now selected for the finals of the international architectural competition of five studios.
