Prague – In addition to the seats at the new building of the National Museum in the city center, the filming of The Gray Man, produced by Netflix, continued today in Prague. The filmmakers, who are in the capital for the second week, built a plot of land on the south side of the former Federal Assembly building due to the scene. According to Netflix, The Gray Man is the most expensive film in its history with a budget of $ 200 million.
Filming, which is scheduled to last until Sunday, has brought with it a number of deadlines and restrictions. It concerned, for example, Čech Bridge, the area around Rudolfina or Pařížská Street. Public transport did not run around the building of the Faculty of Law, the production also affected traffic around the Republic Square. The shooting also concerned Karlín or the Bohnice housing estate in Prague 8. In Prague 7, the busy Dukelských hrdinů street was closed on an extended weekend.
The action thriller is based on the book bestseller of the same name by Mark Greaney from 2009 and starring American actors Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling. Part of the story takes place in Prague, which thus appears admittedly in the film, in contrast to some earlier Hollywood productions, in which the Prague scenery of life was like other countries, most often Russia.
The scene at the National Museum, on the other hand, is likely to take place in a German-speaking country. On a makeshift fence, in the middle of which is a gate with a barrier placed in a series of inscriptions in German. An inscription in the same language on a nearby makeshift building said “staff parking, north entrance”. Foreign license plates were prepared by the production staff on the spot and on the cars that appear in the scene.
The Czech capital is relatively popular with foreign filmmakers. Actor Adam Sandler recently appeared in Prague, starring in Netflix’s feature film based on the book Spaceman of Bohemia. Orlando Bloom also returned to Prague to find the second series of the Carnival Row series produced by Amazon. Earlier, for example, the action thriller Mission: Impossible and Bourne’s Identity, the comic book Hellboy or the Bond film Casino Royale were shot in Prague.
The year 2019 was a record year for the Czech film industry, when, according to the State Fund for Cinematography, thanks to the system of film incentives, nine billion crowns of foreign investment flowed into the Czech Republic. However, according to the fund’s representatives, it would be necessary, as in 2019, to increase the budget of the incentive system from 800 million crowns by at least another 500 million for a renewed influx of foreign staffs. The fund does not yet know the volume of last year’s investments due to the situation with the pandemic.
