Prague has two new re-use centers in Záběhlice and Vysočany
Inappropriate furniture, books read, dishes that can no longer fit in kitchen cabinets can all end up in two new re-use points, which were created at collection yards in Záběhlice and Vysočany. Things that hinder one can serve the other. With this philosophy, the municipality set up pilot re-use points.
“The re-use concept, when new applications are found, instead of being discarded, is already working successfully abroad. We believe that it will find a response from our citizens as well. Even a small change in our consumer behavior can have a big impact overall. This is another on the way of the capital to the goal of reducing waste and introducing a circular economy,“Says the deputy mayor of the capital m of Prague for the Environment Petr Hlubuček (STAN).
No worries and free
Even though the people of Prague, who own a zero wast or waste-free lifestyle, tried, a platform supported by the city, where unnecessary things could be disposed of, was still lacking. That is why the municipality has launched it so far in pilot version only two re-use points and evaluate whether people are interested in the service.
The procedure for getting rid of things is simple. With unnecessary furniture, books, toys or sports equipment, just drive to one of the two re-use centers. These are a special closed large storage container for storing bulky items, such as furniture, sports equipment, prams, medical devices, etc., and a building cell for storing small items (dishes, books, toys, etc.)

The “waste” is then taken over by local trained staff, the products are photographed and inserted into the applicationE. In this, products can be displayed not only by partner organizations, such as shelters or various charities, but of course also by the public. Then all you have to do is book a piece and drive to the collection yard for it and pick it up free of charge.
According to law
It might seem that the creation of re-use centers at collection yards is just such a cosmetic matter, but it is not so. If things are handed over in the yard as such collection, they officially become waste and must be treated accordingly.. There is also a special law, according to which waste can be disposed of only in facilities that are designated for waste management according to this law. Furthermore, only persons authorized to do so should decide on them. Therefore, it is illegal to take things out of the collection yard. And that is why a re-use center was set up at the collection yards so that things could be handed over to a new applicant.
The most popular is furniture
And what is “fussing” in re-use centers? “Most people go for furniture and dishes. Currently, there are about ten applicants a week. Cooperation with organizations does not work very well yetbut I think it’s mostly a small promotion. Nobody knows much about that service. If this improves, I believe that their interest will increase, “said Tomáš Somerauer, an employee from the Záběhl re-use center.
However, re-use centers definitely do not include unnecessary clothing or electronics. They just don’t take them here. If you are not sure if the thing in the re-use center will take you, it is always better call ahead.
