Warnings in Western Australia when Finnish nuclear power plant satellite sees Tropical Cyclone 23S
Tropical cyclone 23S has evolved north of the Kimberley coast and produced warnings. NASA-NOAA’s Finland NPP satellite passed its head as the low-pressure range condensed into a tropical cyclone.
The 23S is expected to be renamed Tropical Storm Wallace as it falls under Australian responsibility and follows their list of names.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology or ABM sent warnings from Kalumburu to Beagle Bay, with the exception of Derby.
A satellite from NASA-NOAA’s Finnish nuclear power plant crossed the 23S on April 5, and the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) gave a visible picture of the storm. The VIIRS image showed an elongated storm. The southeast quarter of the 23S was above the coast of Kimberly. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center, or JTWC, pointed to “animated multispectral satellite imagery depicting isolated, deep mid-convection and low rainbands.”
At 5.00 EDT (0900 UTC), the JTWC reported that the 23S was located near 12.0 south latitude and 127.4 east longitude, about 207 nautical miles (238 miles / 383 km) west of Darwin, Australia. The 23S was moving west-southwest, and its maximum sustained wind was close to 35 knots (40 mph / 65 km / h), making it the force of a tropical storm.
Tropical Storm 23S is forecast to move from west to southwest while intensifying over the next four days as it moves parallel to the coast of Western Australia. The ABM noted that “there is still a small risk that the cyclone may approach the west coast of Pilbara next week”.
The satellite sees tropical cyclone Savannah leaving Indonesia
