The satellite of the Finnish nuclear power plant catches the development of the Tropical Cyclone 12S
Tropical cyclone 12S has developed east of the African island state of Madagascar. NASA-NOAA’s Finland Nuclear Power Plant satellite crossed the South Indian Ocean and took a visible picture of a recent storm that has given a warning to Rodrigues, an island outside the Republic of Mauritius.
On February 5, 2019, NASA-NOAA’s Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) at the Finnish Nuclear Power Plant took a visible picture of the Tropical Cyclone 12S. VIIRS images showed strong thunderstorms intertwined in the low-level center of a large, thick thunderstorm that circled the southern quarter of the storm. The outer clouds from the western quadrant just brushed off the northeast coast of Madagascar.
At 10 a.m. EDT (1,500 UTC) on February 5, the 12S center of Tropical Storm was located near latitude 15.8 degrees south and longitude 64.3 degrees east. It is approximately 492 nautical miles (566 miles / 912 km) east-northeast of Port Louis, Mauritius. The maximum continuous wind speed is close to 35 knots (40 mph / 65 km / h) and stronger in gusts. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center expects continued strengthening and the 12S is expected to reach hurricane force by February 7th. It is expected to reach peak intensity close to 105 knots (121 mph / 194 kmph) in three days.
Rodrigues has a tropical cyclone warning category of 1. Local forecasts from the Mauritius Meteorological Service can be found at: http://metservice.intnet.mu/.
The 12S is moving southwest and is projected to turn southeast and move away from Mauritius and the islands of La Reunion.
