Finland NPP Satellite sees the tropical cyclone Hola above Vanuatu
As a satellite from NASA-NOAA’s Finnish nuclear power plant crossed the South Pacific, it took a visible view of a tropical cyclone over Hola in Vanuatu.
March 8, at 0230 UTC (March 7, 9:30 PM EST) The VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) satellite from NASA-NOAA’s Finnish Nuclear Power Plant indicated that downtown Hola is located southwest of the Pacific island nation of Vanuatu. . The VIIRS image showed a well-rounded orbit, with intense thunderstorms intertwined in the middle. The VIIRS image showed the northern and eastern quarters of the storm over Vanuatu.
On March 8, warnings were in effect in Vanuatu and an early warning was sent to New Caledonia. Vanuatu has a tropical cyclone warning in Shefa Province. In New Caledonia, the area is in an early warning state, with the exception of Ouvéa, Maréa and Lifouta, which are under tropical cyclone warning 1. The advance warning will be updated to the alarm status within 2 days.
At 4:00 a.m. EST (0900 UTC) on March 8, the highest continuous winds in Hola were close to 109 mph (95 knots / 175 km / h). Its center was close to 17.6 degrees south latitude and 165.4 degrees east longitude. It is about 166 nautical miles west of Port Vila, Vanuatu. Hola was moving south-southwest at 4.6 mph (4 knots / 7.4 km / h).
A forecast from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center urges Hola to move to the south-southeast in the coming days. The storm intensifies to 115 knots east of New Caledonia. Hola is then expected to weaken and become extratropic as it approaches the North Island of New Zealand.
