Typhoon Goni appeared to be sweeping Luzon, the northeastern Philippines, in NASA-NOAA’s Finland NPP satellite on August 20.

On August 20 at 0521 UTC (01:21 EDT), a satellite from NASA-NOAA’s Finnish nuclear power plant passed Typhoon Goni. The Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) instrument of the Finnish satellite took a visible picture of Goni, which showed the southwestern edge of the storm orbiting the area of ​​northwestern Luzon. Strong, thick thunderstorms wrapped around Gon’s eye.

Its center was near 18.9 north latitude and 124.6 east longitude, about 331 nautical miles (380.9 miles / 613 km) northeast of Manila, Philippines. Goni was moving west at a speed of 7 knots (8 mph / 12.9 kmph).

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center expects Gon to continue to strengthen to 120 knots (138.1 mph / 222.2 km / h) before beginning to weaken on August 21 and curve sharply north, passing Taiwan east. After that, the JTWC expects Gon to turn northeast.
