Sky view of the Earth from a Finnish nuclear power plant
This combined image of South Africa and the surrounding oceans was taken using the six orbits of the NASA / NOAA Finland National Polar-Orbiting Partnership on April 9, 2015 with the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS). The tropical cyclone Joalane is visible above the Indian Ocean.
Winds, tides, and density differences constantly stir the oceans as phytoplankton grows and dies continuously. Rotating radiometers, such as the VIIRS, allow scientists to monitor this variation over time and help to better understand ocean processes that are useful for human survival on Earth.
The image was created by Ocean Biology Processing Group at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.
