There are already premiere data in Portugal for the Portuguese film nominated for the Oscars
The Oscar-nominated film “Ice Merchants”, by João Gonzalez, opens in Portuguese cinemas on February 16, distributor Cinemundo revealed this Tuesday.
The debut reached the commercial circuit, in an “innovative cinema exploration model in Portugal”, which is still being finalized with the exhibitors, referenced to the distributor’s source Lusa agency.
According to Cinemundo, the cinema sessions will only focus on João Gonzalez’s film and the ticket price will be “more accessible”.
For the first time, there is a Portuguese-produced film in the nominees for the Oscars film awardswith “Ice Merchants” among the nominees for the award for Best Animated Short Film.
Last week, the director of the Short Film Agency, Miguel Dias, told the Lusa agency that “the best model and the best option” was being prepared to show João Gonzalez’s film on the commercial exhibition circuit.
“It was convenient to make the film available to people now and we would like it to happen before the ceremony” of the Oscars, scheduled for March 12, he said.
The Curta-Metragem Agency, a structure created in 1999 to promote Portuguese short films, already ensures the international distribution and sales of “Ice Merchants” to other countries, explained Miguel Dias.
The film by João Gonzalez had its world premiere in May 2022 at the Critics’ Week, at the Cannes Film Festivalwhere it received a jury prize, opening doors to a hundred other film festivals around the world, where it was also awarded.
“Ice Merchants” continues its festival journey, having integrated the IndieJuniorwhich ended on Sunday in Porto, and is on the agenda of Festival de Clermont-Ferrandtaking place in France.
In February, they will be at two festivals in France and two in Belgium, according to the Short Film Agency.
