Havre wrestling takes third in the Malta Invitational

Sugar Mizzy January 30, 2023

Last weekend, the Havre High wrestling team finished its regular season with the Malta Invitational. While several Blue Ponies did not wrestle, six of the eight wrestlers who competed at the venue and Havre finished third in the tournament.

“Overall, it was a good weekend,” HHS head coach Beau LaSalle said. “It was a good way to end the season and kind of solidify what we got for our extras going into the divisional this week so we’re happy with the performance.”

Many Ponies fought well in their final action of the regular season. Wrestling in the 113-pound weight class, Teegan Solomon finished first for the Ponies. In the semifinals, Solomon pinned Dakota Campbell of Billings Central in the first period. Then in the first place game, Solomon pinned Shepherd’s Kade Smith.

Colter Solomon also had a good weekend as he took first at 126 pounds. In the semifinals, Colter pinned Jake Niles from Shepherd. In the championship match, Colter won a 3-2 decision against Gauge Chapman from Chinook.

In the heavyweight group, Tommy Lewis also took first place for the Ponies. In the semifinals, Lewis pinned Morgan Fast from Glasgow in the third period. In the championship match, Lewis pinned Billings Central’s Kirkallen Hoskins.

At 160 pounds, Landen Caplette took fourth for the Ponies. He started the tournament winning by injury default against Conner Lohman from Choteau. In a pair of consolation matches, Caplette pinned Harlem’s Charles Messerly and Shepherd’s Tayvon Rodell. In the consolation semi-final, Caplette won by sudden victory against Colton Honey from Malta/Whitewater.

At 205 pounds, both Mason Wilting and Brandon Healy finished fourth for the Ponies. In some consolation matches, Healy won an 8-2 decision over Sam Cox of Big Sandy and won a 5-2 decision over Kiiw Windy Boy of Harlem.

In the semifinals, Wilting pinned Cox in the first period. Then in the consolation semifinals, Wilting pinned Gus Lee of Choteau. In the third place match, Healy and Wilting both lost to share fourth place.

The regular season has now come to an end for the Ponies as they will compete in the Eastern A Divisionals and the Class A State Tournament over the next two weekends. Along with hosting a divisional at the Havre High Gymnasium this weekend, LaSalle and the Ponies are looking forward to showing what they are capable of this postseason.

“I feel pretty good about where we’re at,” LaSalle said. “It’s always nice to fight in your home gym and sleep in the comfort of your own home so we’re looking forward to that. I think our mindset is set and we’re just kind of itching to get behind it and see. where we end up.”

The HHS wrestling team will begin the postseason with the Eastern A Divisionals at the HHS Gymnasium this Saturday.
