200 semi-skilled teachers in Salzburg’s schools
Education
More than 200 career changers without a degree are active as teachers in the city and state of Salzburg. This is reported by the office of the responsible regional councilor Daniela Gutschi (ÖVP). And such “skilled” teachers are urgently needed due to a lack of staff.
There are exactly 214 teachers who are currently active in Salzburg’s compulsory schools without completing their studies, career changers, student teachers in training or individual teachers who are actually already retired. Nevertheless, in Salzburg alone, as of autumn 2022, there are 90 compulsory school teachers missing.
In order to activate even more career changers, the teacher training colleges throughout Austria will be offering courses from autumn – for people who have not completed a suitable course of study other than teaching, or who have other teaching professional experience.
Minister wants to make teacher training more flexible
Across Austria, 200 to 300 graduates are expected here per year – this WILL not make up for the shortage of teachers, but it at least alleviates the situation.
At the same time, Minister of Education Martin Polaschek (ÖVP) announced that he would make teacher training more flexible – for example with more afternoon, weekend and online courses. Across Austria, there are currently 5,400 unqualified teachers teaching at compulsory schools.
