Merkel’s long-time adviser for providing fighter jets to Ukraine
Does Ukraine still have F16?
The head of the Munich Conference reminded that according to international law, foreign forces are allowed to supply Ukraine with weapons, in particular combat tanks, as well as combat aircraft.
Former adviser to Angela Merkel on foreign policy and current chairman of the Munich Security Conference, Christoph Heusgen, supports the provision of fighter jets to Ukraine to defend against a Russian attack, reports ARD.
“I believe that the supply of fighter jets is sufficient for better protection of Ukraine against Russian attacks,” he emphasized.
In Heusgen’s words, it would be possible to discuss the provision of American F-16 fighters or Soviet-developed fighters from the old stocks of the German Democratic Republic to Kyiv.
He also reminded the Munich conference that according to international law, foreign forces are allowed to supply Ukraine with weapons, in particular combat tanks, as well as combat aircraft.
German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius also spoke out against the provision of German fighter jets to Ukraine. “This is out of the question,” he said.
Meanwhile, Dutch Prime Minister Wopke Hoekstra said last week that the Netherlands had “no taboo” on a corresponding request for F-16s if they were to leave Ukraine, and the Slovak government has openly talked about plans to give Soviet MiG-29s to Ukraine.
