Letter to the Editor – Casinos and Jobs
In the forum post of January 23, the IG of the casino opponents argued in a questionable way and as several times before that the majority of those inclined to casinos “neither live in the country nor pay taxes here. On the other hand, the emissions from their trips back and forth are a burden and disruption (…)». This should also be a reason, among others, why casinos should not have permission.
A fact check shows: According to the Office for Statistics, 41,352 employees were registered in Liechtenstein as of December 31, 2021. Of these, across all economic sectors, 56 percent are commuters from abroad*. This large group of employees has been common with us for many years. It also inevitably contributes to value creation and prosperity at home.
Questions for the IG to answer for the people who form their own opinion:
• Why shouldn’t casinos employ more than 50 percent commuters?
• What is the maximum percentage of commuters that a casino should employ?
• How would the economy in Liechtenstein function without or with fewer commuters? What practical, workable solutions can the IG suggest?
• What does the IG offer employees (residents in Liechtenstein) if they lose their job and wages at the casinos?
