FC Red Bull Salzburg wins after 120 minutes and a dropout from Bratislava’s coach son Weiss – Bundesliga
Successful dress rehearsal for the FC Red Bull Salzburg 7 days before the start of the competitive game in 2023, the top ÖFB Cup quarter-final match against the SK Sturm Graz (Friday, 8:45 p.m., League portal LIVETICKER). Against the Slovak leader of the Fortuna Liga SK Slovan Bratislava the Red Bulls remained undefeated in the fourth friendly in January. After the proud 4:4 at FC Bayern Munich, the 2-1 win vs. Sparta Prague and 3:0 vs. Karlsruhe SC the game-determining Jaissle protégés won in Taxham in a heated match 120 minutes with 1:0. with See also WINTER TEST MATCHES.
After a foul against Junior Adamu, Sekou Koita (left) failed to take the penalty kick due to Slovan goalkeeper Adrian Chovan, who fished the ball from the left corner (from the shooter’s point of view).
Heated party in freezing temperatures in Taxham
In wintry conditions, FC Red Bull Salzburg set the tone in the duel between the Austrian and Slovakian leaders throughout the entire season, which was estimated at 2 x 60 minutes on the pitch at the Taxham training center. The Red Bulls simply didn’t reward themselves enough for their superiority and the clear advantage in scoring chances.
After Noah Okafor had scored the opening goal for Mozartstadt in the 54th minute, Sekou Koita failed to save a penalty (65′, foul on Junior Adamu) by Slovan goalkeeper Adrian Chovan (65′). The brilliant act of one player from Bratislava is followed later by an inglorious action by another. Through captain Vladimir Weiss, the coach’s son. After the nickly duel on the middle line between the 74-time Slovakia national player and the Salzburg ÖFB U21 team player Lukas Ibertsberger, Vladimir Weiss jun. after and rightly received the red card for his assault (95th).
With temperatures around freezing point, tempers heated up afterwards, both coaches (Vladimir Weiss Sr. and Matthias Jaissle) and Salzburg’s sports director Christoph Freund met at the referee to continue the “marathon match” after a “small talk” for over 120 minutes .
Noah Okafor in the 3rd attempt to 1:0
But back to the beginning of the game: In wintry conditions, both teams initially needed a little to get up to operating temperature. However, the party picked up momentum as time went on and mainly featured offensive moves by the Red Bulls. Noah Okafor scored the two most dangerous attempts at goal in the first 45 minutes for the Jaissle team with a well-taken free-kick (32′) and a shot from outside the penalty area (41′) – but he was denied by Bratislava keeper Adrian Chovan.
It was also these two players who were back in focus a few minutes after the first change of ends when FC Red Bull Salzburg made it 1-0 (54′). The Slovakian goalkeeper steered the ball towards the crossbar when Okafor scored, but according to the referee team only behind the line. Eleven minutes later, Slovan’s goalie did well again when the Red Bulls were awarded a penalty after a foul on Junior Adamu and Chovan came out on top in a duel with scorer Sekou Koita (65′).
After that, Salzburg continued to set the tone, but only came up with more chances in the additional half hour that was added after 90 minutes for testing purposes, and a few substitutions. Ibertsberger (91′), Fernando (104′) and new signing Gloukh (113′) came closest to scoring, but were unlucky with their shots – just like the guests, who were never really compelling at any point in the game.
The Red Bulls were 1-0 after 120 minutes.
Intense duels at the practice canter between the Austrian and Slovakian leaders.
“I’m in good spirits that we’ll defeat the tough chunk of Sturm Graz”
Head coach Matthias Jaissle: “It was a good performance in terms of play. There was a lot that we want to see in competitive games. Therefore, the conclusion is very positive. We still have a week until the first competitive game in the cup against Graz. Until then we will do everything we can to defend the boys as best we can. Then I’m in good spirits that we will defeat the tough chunk of Sturm Graz.”
Winning goalscorer Noah Okafor: “We can be satisfied with the game today. We tried a lot after this intensive preparation. We can also use the game well to gain insights from it in the analysis, then we are well prepared for Sturm Graz.”
