The Slovenian art house Kino Kinodvor celebrates 100 years
LJUBLJANA: Leading Slovenian art house cinema in 2023 Movie theater in Ljubljana is not only celebrating its centenary, but also two decades of art cinema programming and 15 years of existence as a public entity.
The anniversaries will be marked by a series of events and special programs, which will begin on January 29, 2023 with the screening of 12 of the most popular films from the cinema’s regular program.
“From the summer of 2022, we will again reach the numbers before the pandemic. Even during the pandemic, the responses of our visitors filled us with optimism, as they came to Kinodvor whenever possible and despite the restrictions. We are convinced that in times marked by crises, with great changes and uncertainty, we all need culture and art more than ever,” summed up Kinodvor director Metka Dariš, adding that the long-term goal is to open an additional venue, a new miniplex, in the center of Ljubljana, as a joint plan with the City of Ljubljana.
In 2022, despite the pandemic restrictions that were in place until mid-April, Kinodvor exceeded the expected attendance, as it counted more than 100,000 visitors, of which more than 33,000 were in the Film Education Program for young people.
The film with the best attendance in 2022 (more than 4,000 views) was a Slovenian comedy Slut, a derogatory term for a woman / Slut, a derogatory term for a womandirected by Tijana Zinajić and produced in December in co-production with RTV Slovenia, Atalanta, Gustav Film, 001, Teleking and Institute of EE.
The cinema, which today is called Kinodvor, was built in 1923 as a luxury city cinema in the late Secession style called Ljubljana Palace. In 1935, the Sloga Railwaymen’s Cultural Association took over the management of the renamed Sloga Cinema, until in 1946 the state took ownership of all Slovenian cinemas. Kino Sloga became notorious in the 1980s for showing erotic films, until it was reborn as Kino. The court in the 1990s.
It’s October 2003 Municipality of Ljubljanathe Ministry of Cultureand Slovenian Cinematheque agreed to renovate and re-establish the cinema as the home of contemporary art film under the name Kinodvor.
It was in 2008 Municipality of Ljubljana founded the public institution Kinodvor, and in October of the same year Kinodvor began operating as a municipal cinema.
Kinodvor received Europe cinematographers The award for the best young audience activity in 2010 and the award for the best programming in 2019.
