VIDEO Could Slovakia also organize the senior EURO? Kováčik put things in perspective
BRATISLAVA – In 2025, Slovakia is awaiting a huge project of organizing the under-21 football European Championship. If we could manage such a demanding event, can we, as an organizer, also apply for another event?
The answer is no. We don’t even have the necessary infrastructure to organize senior championships. Our biggest stand, Tehelné pole in Bratislava, can hold “only” 22,000 spectators.
“The under-21 European Championship is a ceiling. We don’t have the possibility to organize a big EURO, even if we join the next season. We don’t have a stadium that exceeds the capacity of 30,000, which is a condition.” said SFZ president Ján Kováčik at the press conference.
He confirmed the sad but true news. During the previous years of headship of Slovak football, Ján Kováčik and his colleagues systematically worked on the development of stadium infrastructure, but these fields are only sufficient for a youth tournament.
In the next few years, maybe even a decade, Slovakia will definitely not see a big European football holiday at the senior level. The biggest thing that awaits our fans is the mentioned EURO under 21, which Slovakia will host in 2025.
