Salzburg: billion project is picking up speed
Three sample routes as a basis
Because the entire route has not yet been determined, the calculation is based on three 17-kilometer reference routes. Variant 01 will cost almost two billion euros with a 3.5-kilometer tunnel and four underground stations. For variant 02, an additional tunnel kilometer and a further stop were assumed. Cost: 2.2 billion euros. The most expensive and third assumption: a seven-kilometer tunnel and nine underground stations for 2.8 billion euros.
The project planners are now hoping for factual and less emotionally influenced decision-making by politicians. The multi-billion dollar project is the only solution for the future of transport in central Salzburg with a lasting effect. “It makes environmental and economic sense,” says Managing Director Knittel, referring to the Economica study just presented.
The federal government will cover 50 percent of the costs. Salzburg had already picked up this commitment in December 2020 in the framework financing agreement. However, the cost shares of the city and state are only negotiated up to Mirabell. A clear recommendation for the entire route to Hallein should then be available before construction of the heart begins – at the end of 2023 at the earliest.
