From the extreme cold in Portugal to the snow in the Arabian peninsula – that’s how winter goes
cold snap crosses the North hemisphere. Portugal is on alert until Sunday with negative temperatures in several districts. Some municipalities have already activated the contingency plans. In Lisbon, shelters were created for the homeless and street teams were strengthened.
On a viaduct next to Santa Apolónia station, volunteers try to bring some heat to those on the street. Natália Amador, from CASA, the Support Center for the Homeless, explains that the place is “very cold and full of drafts”, but that many prefer to stay there. “Even when there are these cold nights, it’s usually one of the few places to stay,” she says.
In Greece, it is heavy rain that is causing problems. The police ask the population to avoid all trips, especially for those who live in the capital. Several neighborhoods are flooded and isolated.
Some countries in Asia face even tougher conditions.
In Japan, the sudden drop in never reached the coast in the north and east of the country and turned any displacement into a nightmare.
The storm also hit South Korea. The mantle never reached 70 centimeters in height in some localities.
Snow has also become a sight in the southern Arabian Peninsula, especially in the highlands of Oman.
