Ágnes Kunhalmi: There is a living crisis in Hungary, and within that, a housing crisis
The energy efficiency of residential buildings in Hungary is one of the worst in the EU.
“In Hungary, there is a living crisis, and within that, a housing crisis. the colder days are coming, many people are trying to get through this in their outdated, inadequately insulated and unheated homes.
The energy efficiency of residential buildings in Hungary is one of the worst in the EU. In many places, the street is heated in homes without insulation. Two-thirds of domestic apartments are over 40 years old, a significant part of them are in a neglected state, 60 percent of them have not been modernized or renovated since they were built.
The MSZP submitted a resolution proposal in order to change this and to finally start a national insulation program. According to our proposal, the available state and EU funds should be allocated to a Home Renovation Fund.
Based on our submitted draft, the implementation would have immediate positive developments:
- overhead costs would continue to decrease, which could mean the realization of a real and lasting overhead reduction
- the value of real estate would increase,
- there would be less air pollution,
- the situation of those living in the sublet would also improve, as they would have to spend less on bills, their expenses would be reduced,
Hungary’s dependence on Russian gas and fossil energy carriers in general would be significantly reduced.”
