Next Thursday and Friday, the Principality of Monaco is preparing to celebrate Sainte Dévote, the patron saint of Monaco. Highlight of the year on the Rock, this tradition has been perpetuated since 1874, in the presence of the Sovereign and the princely family, accompanied by Monegasque personalities.
The links between the Principality of Monaco and Corsica are anchored in this religious meeting insofar as, according to legend, Divota, a young Christian born in Corsica, was martyred by the prefect Barbarus under the Emperors Diocletian and Maximian at all beginning of the fourth century AD. His body, stolen by the faithful, was put in a boat, brought to Monaco and buried in a chapel in the valley known as “des Gaumates”, in the immediate vicinity of the port. These links have lasted through the centuries and can be found today in the relations between Monaco and Corsica, which also honors Sainte Dévote, particularly in Lucciana.
The Porto-Vecchian singing duo Fred Bichet and Nicolas Careddu will also be present during these two days of celebration in the Principality. A duo accustomed to this meeting at the prince’s palace, but also at the Sainte Dévote chapel and at the Cathedral insofar as it has been five years in a row that Fred Bichet and Nicolas Careddu have been invited to the festivities marking this end of January. .
