3.1 earthquake on the Richter scale felt south of mainland Portugal — DNOTICIAS.PT
An earthquake was felt on the Portuguese mainland this evening, at 9:59 pm, according to the records of the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA), whose stations of the Mainland Seismic Network calculate that the magnitude was 3.1 on the Richter scale.
The “epicenter was located about 30 km south-southeast of Vila Real de Santo António”, stresses the IPMA. “This earthquake, according to the information available at the time, does not cause personal or material damage and was felt with maximum intensity II (modified Mercalli scale) in the municipalities of Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António (Faro)”.
The IPMA informs that “if the situation justifies it, new communications will be issued”, noting that “the location of the epicenter of an earthquake is a complex physical and mathematical process that depends on the set of data, algorithms and wave control models earthquakes”, recalling that “different agencies can produce different isolated results. Likewise, preliminary determinations are usually corrected later, by integrating more information”.
In all cases, the authority advises people to “always follow the indications of the civil protection services”.
