Weather: The bad weather also hit Thessaloniki
Trees fell in various areas of Thessaloniki yesterday. due to winds of 5-6 Beaufort that prevailed in the city. According to an announcement by the Municipality of Thessaloniki, there were eight tree falls at Marasli 3, Turkish Consulate, Eptapyrgio before the entrance to the castle, Rotunda (Saint George’s Church), Plastira with N. Jardinidis, Plutonos with Papandreou, Voulgari 31 and Mitropoleos 63.
The fallen trees, despite the fact that no external symptoms of fragility appeared, were found to have a fragility root system after the fall. All the aforementioned trees were uprooted, while no material damage was caused by the falls.
In all cases, the on-call crew of the Directorate of Greenery & Environment Management intervened in cooperation with the Autonomous Department of Civil Protection of the Municipality of Thessaloniki. The contribution of the Thessaloniki Traffic Directorate and the Hellenic Police was important.
In the meantime, the head of the Civil Protection Department of the Central Macedonia Region, Babis Stergiadis, told APE-MPE that the phenomena have de-escalated, while rains are predicted for the weekend.
