Sweden supplies Ukraine with modern infantry fighting vehicles and artillery
Sweden has just announced another military aid package to Ukraine. Under that package, Ukraine would receive infantry fighting vehicles and self-propelled artillery pieces.
Ulf Kristersson, Sweden’s Prime Minister, announced that the tenth military aid package that Sweden sent to Ukraine would contain approx. 50 CV9040 infantry fighting vehicles and a secret number of 155mm Archer wheeled self-propelled howitzers. The rumors mention 12 examples.
In addition to the IFVs and the self-propelled artillery pieces, Sweden is sending another batch of NLAW systems to Ukraine, along with small arms, minute leveling tools and probably a bundle of ammunition.
When it comes to the CV9040, the transfer may involve CV9040A vehicles held in stock or the more modern CV9040B variant. The CV9040 IFVs use a relatively powerful 40mm Bofors L70 cannon firing the 40x365R mm gun. Ammunition inventory includes APFSDS rounds, HE rounds and 3P programmable ammunition. 7.62 mm coaxial machine gun has been added to the primary armament. CV9040 IFVs do not have ATGM launchers.
The CV90 would be the third Western IFV design operated by Ukraine, following the US-made M2A2 ODS Bradleys (50) and German Marder 1s (40 examples).
Archer is a highly automated, self-propelled artillery system based on the Volvo A30D. The 155 mm FH77 L52 gun is the primary armament. The remote-controlled turret houses an autoloader system capable of receiving 21 sets of ammunition, consisting of the projectile and propellant charges. The Archer has been tailored to fire Excalibur rounds, and similarly to the Polish Krab system, it offers a range of up to 50 kilometers when using these munitions.
