Challenge to find solutions to reduce motorcycle accidents | Information Barcelona
Barcelona City Council, through the collaboration of the Commissioner for the 2030 Agenda and BIT Habitay, and Barcelona Fairacross the hall Tomorrow.Mobility World Congress, promote an international challenge for companies, start-ups, universities and innovation centers to find urban solutions that aim to reduce motorcycle-related accidents.
Barcelona is one of the European cities with the greatest presence of motorcycles and mopeds, which represent 33% of the total vehicle census, and motorcycle drivers account for 86% of the seriously injured in accidents, according to the balance of road accidents from the first semester of 2022.
What is the challenge? The projects can be aimed at resolving the accident rate from behavioral innovation, that is, with solutions related to driving habits, and technological innovation.
Who is he going to lead? The challenge is aimed at companies, start-ups, universities, research centers, technology centers, associations and foundations, who have until March 1 to present their projects.
What is the economic endowment? Each winning proposal will have an endowment of between 40,000 and 100,000 euros, which will correspond to a maximum of 8% of the total amount of the proposed solution. The total endowment of the project is 200,000 euros, which will be distributed among the winning proposals.
What is the execution schedule? The execution time of the selected proposals is 18 months, of which the pilot phase must comprise a minimum of six.
What are the evaluation criteria? The proposal must be applicable in a real environment in the short term and must define, in this sense, its space of use. In addition, it must achieve quantifiable results that are lasting over time in relation to the safety of motorcyclists and third parties. Its innovative and differential component will also be valued both in the methodologies and resources used and in its execution.
A committee of experts will assess the technical quality of the works presented and will choose the winning solution, which could be applied in Barcelona this year.
International projection: the projects will participate in the next edition of Tomorrow.Mobility, which will be held in November together with the Smart City Expo World Congress at Fira de Barcelona. The winners will be able to access a workspace in Barcelona Fair and they will have advisory services and access to municipal data.

The challenge has been launched within the framework of the 2030 Agenda and the collaboration agreement signed in December by Barcelona City Council and the DGT to reduce motorcycle accidents in the city. It is part of the Barcelona Innova Lab Mobility initiative, promoted by BIT Habitat, with the support of the commissioner of the 2030 Agenda, with the aim of promoting and facilitating the execution of pilot tests and new projects in the field of smart and sustainable urban mobility. in order to diversify the city’s economy and consolidate Barcelona as the capital of mobility innovation in southern Europe.
