The eyes of the handball planet are currently riveted on Poland and Sweden, where the French team is performing at the world championships. But for professional clubs, out of the question to leverage the foot during this international break. This Friday evening at 7 p.m. at the Jacques-Clouché Omnisports Center, the Fénix Toulouse teams, currently 7e of Liqui Moly Starligue (the elite of French handball) and BHB Billère-Pau, residents of Proligue (second division), have made an appointment for a gala match.
“We have sold 420 tickets so far and we hope to reach 500 or even 600 spectators”
A meeting organized by AL Agen which took advantage of its good relations with the Bearn club to set up this event. The main purpose of the match is to promote the practice of this sport which is still underdeveloped in the department. Indeed, there are only nine clubs in the Lot-et-Garonne for about 1,500 licensees. The president of the Agenais club, Laurent Debourges, still attended a good crowd in the Boétienne room. “On one sold 420 tickets for the moment and we hope to reach 500, even 600 spectators. Surrounding clubs such as Valence-d’Agen, Foulayronnes, Brax or Cancon have planned to come in large numbers. »
Held the curious
The Amicale Laïque club had already organized a few international level events in the past: the 4 Nations U21 Tournament in 2017, or the reception of the Mios-Biganos club for women’s European Cup posters in 2013. This meeting is an opportunity to highlight the club which experienced a drop in licensees after the Covid, but which “has regained its cruising speed”, in the words of the club secretary, Frédéric Grava. He also promises to make this event “an accessible party”. With a single price of 7 euros for the public as well as free for children under 6, it will “attract regulars, the curious but also families not used to seeing very high level handball adds the secretary.
On the sporting level, Toulouse will move without its internationals but with a homogeneous group combining professionals and young people, while Billère will come in full. Finally, Laurent Debourges promises that “if the event is a success and the teams are satisfied, there will be no obstacle to renewing such a match”.
