Sweden announces military aid to Ukraine, to send howitzers, armored vehicles
On Thursday, the Swedish government announced new military aid to Ukraine. Meanwhile, German and US defense officials discussed sending tanks to Ukraine to bolster defenses against Russia.
The package would include armored infantry fighting vehicles and Archer artillery systems, reports said. The SEK 4.3 billion package will include light, portable NLAW anti-tank weapons, mine clearance equipment and assault rifles, according to reports.
Reuters quotes Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson as saying that Ukraine is fighting for Europe’s freedom. “That is one of the biggest reasons why so many countries are doing so much to help Ukraine right now. The moral support is important, but also our common security,” Reuters quoted Kristersson as saying.
Sweden will send around 50 of its Type 90 infantry tracked and armored fighting vehicles, the publication reported. According to reports, the vehicle can be used to transport up to eight infantry soldiers and is equipped with a 40-millimeter automatic cannon.
Sweden would send Bofors BAE-made Archer systems – vehicle-mounted self-propelled gun howitzers – a piece of equipment Ukraine has long demanded.
